Spring Break Safety Tips

Nervous about your student going on a spring break trip? You are not alone. College students may be ready for some fun and relaxation, but parents worry about the “What ifs?” and the choices students will make during break.

Here are some tips to share with your student before they go:

  • Be mindful about what you share on social media regarding your travel and location.
  • Limit how much cash you carry.
  • Keep your credit and debit cards in a safe place.
  • Always be aware of your surroundings and location.
  • Walk in groups in well-lit areas.
  • Look out for each other. Be the friend you would want to have if/when your peers need help.
  • If traveling by car, switch drivers as needed in order to stay alert.
  • If you drink, drink responsibly. Remember people who are impaired are at much greater risk for harm.
  • Call the local police immediately if an incident happens or if you become concerned about your safety.

Before leaving your student housing (on or off-campus) for break:

  • Close your blinds and curtains and lock all your doors and windows.
  • Take valuables and electronics with you.
  • Clean out your refrigerator and dispose of perishable foods.
  • Take out your trash.
  • Move your vehicle to a safe and secure location and note seasonal parking regulations.

For travel outside of the United States:

  • Check for safety warnings at the State Department’s website before you travel.
  • Carry emergency numbers for local police, government agencies, hospitals, U. S. Embassy and other safe locations where you can find assistance, if necessary.
  • Make sure you know how to use the local phone system.
  • Use common sense and do not draw attention to yourself.
