Someday Starts Today

Do you have a dream? You know, the one in your head, where you think, “Someday, I’m going to…”

Now I don’t exactly mean a bucket list, however I have one of those, too. My bucket list is filled with fun activities and travel-related wishes. Attend cooking school in Tuscany. Learn to play pickle ball. Go on an African Safari with Marty. Backpack through Europe with our girls. Take surfing lessons. See the Rockettes perform in New York City. Learn to kick like a Rockette (without breaking a hip). Or, more realistically, just learn to dance at the next family wedding without embarrassing myself.

The dream I am talking about today has nothing to do with dancing or travel. This one has been percolating for years in the back of my mind. I believe this dream took root in the early 90’s when I was a wide-eyed student at the University of North Dakota. After the first semester of taking general education classes, I knew one thing for certain. I loved writing. I adored English, grammar, the written word, and how words worked together to tell a story. While other students dreaded term papers, essays, and writing speeches, I actually enjoyed them. No, really, I’m serious. I like to write. Upon graduation, I embraced the real world. I became an employee, a volunteer, a wife, and a mother. I worked for an airline, a department store, an ad agency, took time to raise our family, and then worked for a healthcare system. The entire time, in the back of my head, a little voice whispered, “You should start your own freelance writing business. You should write a book.” I’d sigh and think, “yeah, someday.”

I was sure that someday life would settle down and be less busy. That someday I’d have the time to develop a business plan and create a book outline. I prayed for clients who would want to work with me as their freelance writer…someday. I hoped that someday I’d know, without a doubt, it was the right time to start penning that book. I wished that someday I’d be able to invest the time and money to make it happen. That I’d have the courage to chase this writer’s dream…someday.

I’m here to tell you that someday starts today. Did all of the stars align? Did my fairy godmother float in and grant all of my wishes with one swish of her magic wand? Life isn’t so simple. However, with the support of my family, I did take that leap of faith and chose to start my own writing business, Radi to Write. Yes, someday is now. I have had the privilege of working with so many smart, savvy people through the years, some of whom are already my freelance clients. For those trusted relationships, I am grateful.

One of my friends was a little confused about what a freelance copywriter actually does. So, I explained to her that I write customized articles, press releases, ads, and brochures to help promote my clients’ products or ideas. I also create newsletters and blogs for my business clients to use either internally for their employees, or externally for their customers. Sometimes I help tweak web content or draft staff biographies. No two clients are alike. For one particular client, I am writing his strategic seminar materials. For another it is a industry-specific blog. I help small businesses identify and share their voices and work with larger businesses and agencies to finish projects when they need extra hands to meet deadlines. I am thrilled that I am able to tap into my public relations degree and marketing background to do the work I love most…write.

Being a self-employed writer also allows me the time to pursue my other “someday” dream of writing a book. While I’m not ready to share the details just yet, I am excited that someday is now. I’m learning how writing a book is a very personal journey, a lot like a new pregnancy. While you want to shout the exciting news from the rooftops as soon as the test comes back positive, your instincts tell you to keep it to yourself until you get past the first trimester. So, that is all the book news I’m ready to share for now. I’ll let you know when I’m past that first trimester phase and then we can pick out (book) names together.

Until then, if you or anybody you know is looking for a copywriter, please call me. Today–not someday–is a terrific day to update your business materials, refresh your brochure content or create a customized internal newsletter for your employees. I’m here to partner with you to help you share your story and promote your business.

Someday starts today.
