#RealLifeWonderWoman — Meet Deborah Johnson

One day you wake up and the world has changed. Your body changes, your relationships change and even your work changes. Your coworkers are starting to call you ma’am and you no longer feel relevant. You’re not dead, but there is a tuck of urgency when you’re suddenly acutely aware of that change. As you reassess and evaluate, you quickly figure out you have more to give, except you’re not sure where to start!

This is where today’s #RealLifeWonderWoman can help you take action. Deborah Johnson is an international award-winning music artist, speaker and the author of Women at Halftime: Principles for Producing Your Successful Second Half. She helps women get unstuck by producing and executing a successful plan for their “second half.”

Just as there is halftime in sports, most of us need to take a moment and reflect on our life at halftime. The decisions you make at halftime will largely determine how you will live the rest of your life. Will you merely face into the second half of life, operating with a tired and outdated strategy, living on autopilot? Or will you successfully reinvent yourself and climb to your personal peak of Hero Mountain™®? What will you do with your second half?

As a woman entering my second half, I was totally drawn to Deborah’s book, which ultimately led us to connecting in person. She’s bold, she’s kind and she’s here today to share her thoughts with you.

KR: Hi Deb! So glad you’re here to share your perspectives with us! Would you please tell us about what brings you joy and fulfillment?

DJ: I love creating content—whether composing a score, a musical, books or online programs that help others move forward in life and business.

KR: We all have inner superpowers. What are some of yours?

DJ: Stick-to-it-ness, tenacity and the ability to work hard until a project is completed. This takes commitment to a process and absolute focus because it’s so easy to get side-tracked. I can also break down a project into small steps to help not only myself, but others be extremely successful.

KR: Can you tell us about an influential woman in your life and how she inspired you?

DJ: My mother. There was not a lazy bone in her body. When she wanted to learn something, she checked out books from the library (they didn’t have the internet back then!) and figured out how to do it. She was extremely artistic and detailed and did not let her perfectionism get in the way of creating a huge body of work. She was also a “giver.” If she knew you wanted or needed something, she’d figure out a way to get it for you.

KR: If you could have one super-human power, what would it be?

DJ: The ability to re-invent myself as I’ve had to do it so many times and an irrepressible spirit. I actually learned that from my mother! But I have God-given gifts that I readily give Him credit for—a natural artistic ability.

KR: What do you do for fun? What are your hobbies?

DJ: Gardening. Actually pruning, which sounds weird, but I feel so productive when I can clear away part of a plant or tree to encourage further growth. I also make jam and pies…mainly for gifts and fun.

KR: Knowing what you know at this stage of your life, what words of wisdom would you give to your 20-year-old self?

DJ: Stick with one thing and really accomplish it—then move on. Commit to study and excellence, but not perfection.
