#RealLifeWonderWoman — Meet Athena Currier

Last year, I began working in earnest on my next book project–one geared for women with a Wonder Woman vibe. I knew I wanted to have a female team to align with the mission of empowering women. I needed an illustrator and book designer. But who?

And then…I was introduced to Athena.

Yes, Athena!

Not only did her name shout “Greek Mythololgy” to me, but she had a passion for comic book-inspired design. We immediately hit it off. And, well, the rest of it is history. (Read to the end to see the masterpiece she created for me!)

I’m thrilled to introduce you to this week’s #RealLifeWonderWoman…Athena Currier!

KR: Can you tell us about what brings you joy and fulfillment?
AC: I love comic books—so much so that I went to grad school for them! (The official title is “MFA in Sequential Art.”) Any time I get to design a book cover that feels “comic book-y,” it’s a real treat.

KR: I believe we all have inner superpowers. What are some of yours?
AC: I’m extremely organized (some might say obsessively so). I find strong organizational skills crucial as a freelancer. I’m also very earnest; if I care about something, I care intensely and sincerely.

KR: Can you tell us about an influential woman in your life and how she inspired you?
AC: My friend Jamie Schumacher. She is an author, artist, community organizer, and so much more. I have described her to many people as “a real-life Leslie Knope.” I had the opportunity to design and illustrate her book, IT’S NEVER GOING TO WORK, in 2018. It was an absolute dream project, and I’m so happy with the way it turned out.

KR: If you could have one super-human power, what would it be?
AC: Super strength. I’d love to be able to protect myself in a scary situation, ala Buffy or Jessica Jones. It would also be handy for just like, rearranging furniture.

KR: What do you do for fun? What are your hobbies?
AC: I love drawing, gardening, movies, podcasts, and my beautiful pit bull, Wilma.

KR: Knowing what you know at this stage of your life, what words of wisdom would you give to your 20-year-old self?
AC: Don’t worry so much! Most of the things you worry about turn out to be no big deal. (My current self could still use this advice…)
