How to become more resilient

Are You Resilient?

We all have times in our lives when we fall down—literally or figuratively—and find ourselves bruised emotionally, physically, or spiritually. What do you do when you fall?

Do you stay down?

Or do pick yourself back up?

When you’re faced with obstacles, do you succumb? Or do you surmount?

What would Wonder Woman do?

She’d use the Power of Resilience!

Resilience in its simplest form is our ability to bounce back from adversity as efficiently as possible. Maybe you’re recovering from a medical situation. Maybe you’re in an adverse work environment. Maybe you’re healing from a rough divorce or personal trauma. Whatever adversities you face, resilience is the superpower that will keep you functioning— physically and psychologically.

When you are resilient, you harness inner strength that helps you rebound from a setback. Without resilience, you might dwell on problems too long, become overwhelmed, or turn to unhealthy coping mechanisms.

Please understand, however, that resilience can’t make problems go away. Rather, it gives you the ability to see past them and work through them. It can improve your ability to cope—to persevere.

Do not judge me by my success, judge me by how many times I fell down and got back up again.
― Nelson Mandela

Becoming more resilient takes time and practice. It’s a choice. It involves being self-aware and taking action. Fortunately, resilience is something you can continue to develop throughout life. Here are some steps you can take to grow your resilience.

5 Ways to Become More Resilient

1. Ask for Help

When you fall, it’s ultimately up to you to pick yourself back up. But that doesn’t mean you have to do it alone. Ask for help. Your tribe will lift you. That’s why it’s important to build strong, healthy, positive relationships with people who support you in both good times and bad. These are the superheroes who will remind you of your purpose and value even when you cannot see it.

2. Be Intentional

You can’t pick yourself up if you’re in denial about being down. Don’t ignore your problems. Instead, identify your problems and priorities. Figure out what you need to do and do it. Be like Wonder Woman and take action!

3. Set Realistic Goals

Recovering from a setback is hard work, and can feel overwhelming. So how do you eat an elephant? One bite at a time! Break your goals down into bite-size chunks with realistic timeframes. Keep in mind that small steps are still steps in the right direction.

4. Take Care of Yourself

Get enough sleep. Eat well. Do something physical every day, especially when you are recovering from trauma. De-stress with yoga, meditation, guided imagery, or prayer. These things really do work, but you actually have to do them if you want to see results.

5. Remain Hopeful

You can’t change the past, but you can look toward the future. Instead of fixating on what you cannot change or what has already happened, focus on what you can do to move beyond it. Accepting and even anticipating change makes it easier to embrace challenges with less anxiety.

With resilience, you have the power to persevere when faced with the potholes in life.
