#RealLifeWonderWoman–Meet Amy Skjei

When I met today’s #RealLifeWonderWoman, it was on the tennis court at women’s league. Little did I know that the kind woman with the killer serve was also a classically trained concert pianist, composer and recording artist. Like Wonder Woman, Amy has depth and character. She’s multi-faceted and multi-talented, with a heart of gold.
These days, Amy’s traded in her tiara and cape for scrubs, working as a registered nurse. But it is her role as wife and mom that really lets her super powers shine! Please read on to learn more about Amy Skjei, today’s #RealLifeWonderWoman.
KR: Tell me about what brings you joy and fulfillment.
AS: The things that bring joy and fulfillment in my life are spending time with my family, especially at our family cabin. Others are playing piano, composing new music, spending time with friends and even taking my dog, Lucy, for a walk. I always look forward to summer tennis league to start as I really do enjoy this and only wish time permitted in playing more tennis and piano. My dreams in life are to continue to live my life fairly simply. I can only hope and pray for continued health for myself and the rest of my family and that our youngest daughter, Autumn, who has both Mosaic Down Syndrome and Autism, will be able to live her life as fulfilling as she can. My dream for her is that she will always be safe and protected when Erik and I leave this earth. My hope is to be able to continue traveling as much as I can and experience the beauty that God created for us.

KR: We all have inner superpowers. What are some of yours?
AS: I’m a self starter, imaginative and creative, perceptive, a thinker, self disciplined, persistent, very loyal to my family and friends, an advocate for my family and patients.
KR: Can you tell us about an influential woman in your life and how she inspired you?
AS: The most influential woman in my life is my mother. She is selfless, loving and compassionate. She leads by example and always carries a smile and positive attitude as well as positive intent. She has always been there for me and supported me. She has helped shape who I am today and I am proud to have her as my mother.
KR: If you could have one super-human power, what would it be?
AS: If I could have one super power, and boy, do I wish I could have more because then I could really make the world a better place, but if I had to pick one, I would rid the world of hate (and all cancers and diseases…and maybe if everyone had Down Syndrome, the world would be a perfect place…lol…ok, thats more than one).
KR: Knowing what you know at this stage of your life, what words of wisdom would you give to your 20-year-old self?
AS: If I could go back and tell my 20 year old self some things about life:
I would tell myself even back then to live more simply and purposefully.
Be less preoccupied (I am still working on that, hard when you have a senior in HS who is leaving soon).
Don’t cast doubt, just go for it!
Believe in yourself instead of picking everything you do apart.
Life goes by in a blink of an eye-don’t miss it
Stop…take heart in all the beauty that surrounds us. It is OK to be still and actually quiet our minds because it is then that we become most inspired.
KR: As a piano fan, I just can’t get enough of Amy’s music. Here’s one more sample song for your listening pleasure.  Enjoy!
